Success Story – Paul

Paul has consented for his real name to be used. Some identifying details have been changed

Without Martina and the Building Bridges programme, I don’t know where I’d be today. Their support has helped me regain stability, independence, and hope for the future.

Paul’s feedback on support received through the programme and from his Building Bridges Support Worker.

Paul was in a difficult place before joining the Building Bridges programme. He had recently lost his job and was living in a camper van, struggling to keep warm, access basic facilities and stay connected due to a lack of phone and internet connection.

Life in the van played a role in Paul’s deteriorating health. He suffered from severe back pain which was worsened by the cold and damp conditions. Paul found it difficult to see a GP because he couldn’t book appointments online or keep his phone charged. Finding a job was also difficult without a permanent address, and despite registering for social housing, Paul faced delays and a lack of response from housing services. He felt stuck, with no clear way forward.

Around this time, Paul was introduced to Building Bridges Support Worker Martina who listened to his situation without judgment and started helping him navigate through the challenges he was experiencing. With Martina’s support, Paul was able to get a GP appointment which led to a review of his medication. This made a huge difference in Paul’s ability to function daily. Martina also secured a free laptop for Paul through Wiltshire Digital Drive and helped him obtain a SIM card with extra data, whilst advising him on ways to improve his job search.

With Martina’s support, Paul started volunteering with a local organisation. This volunteering opportunity later led to a full-time job offer. Paul is now in full-time employment, enjoying work which suits his skills and experience. Paul’s living situation has also improved and, whilst he still lives in his van, Paul’s employer allows him to park on site where he has access to facilities.
